Little Prince

June 2010

Petrov Scientific research Institute of Oncology, Russia

Producer:

Educators: studio "Da" and studio "Sinii kit"

We consider “The Little Prince” an amazing fairy tale – contemporary, sad and touching. There’s a bitter feeling of childhood slipping away, and this feeling can be distinguished behind the allegories of planets, drunks and geographers. In the process of growing up we certainly lose more than we acquire. And the illusion of having reached a point of understanding something about life – this illusion is pathetic, theatrical self-deception. The film was created at Petrov Scientific research Institute of Oncology (Saint-Petersburg)

After a story of Tuvi Janson. An elder brother Homsa is a common boy. A world around him is boring, he lacks bright interesting events and level life of his parents weights him down. He is afraid of this quiet uneventful life of grown-ups. Very often such stories run too far and his innocent tales become cruel lies. However, life will teach Homsa a lesson: as he wanders around a forest in deep thicket he will find a small colorful house where the most horrible story of his life is waiting for him.

This movie is based on real events, the whole story was told by grandfather of one of the Studio teachers. This project was very special for us because along with kids the old women, the witnesses of the Second World War, took part in drawing. They told us stories from that hard years, and the kids could feel the atmosphere of remote times. There are lots of films about that war; but we attempted to create a film where there will be no negative or positive characters, but will be Life as it is – true, uninvented and absolutely wonderful.

This cartoon was made at the social center for children and families in crisis. We offered kids an idea about an Indian village where strange and frightening things were going on. The kids were asked to create the whole story and the story conclusion. It is almost a detective story which at the same time tells us about very important things - about the name and how precious is to remember and keep it.

At Masha Berkovich’s seminar we were inspired by one activity: creating stories about different things lying on the table. A shell, a stone, a battered toy horse, an alarm clock, an antique jewelry, a wooden spoon, an unknown tin can. For 10 minutes a small thing and the person who chose it were connected by an interesting shared experience. And what if it lasted longer?! A usual or a strange thing? But for you it is the most favorite, the most valuable one! Stop for a moment and look. Get impressed. Feel it again. Learn something big through something small. And here is a cartoon about a heron who wanted some, a little bit strange, thing.

A Cartoon from Pavlovsk. Initially, we wanted to engage the girls in working on the simplest things in the world. You remember, we were pouring water, mixing colors, sprinkling sand, lighting the candles and baking waffles. But as often happens, when you decide to pay attention to something absolutely simple, not tricky, and moreover you do it together with someone, you turn out to be closest to the essence of things. So this cartoon is about the beginning of the world, about the beginning of something mutual and about the silence, of course. Based on Roma Sokolov’s comic book.

Two years ago in Berlin, we found an excellent book "SIX MEN" by David McKee. It was such a clear, bright, timeless story that we immediately decided to make a cartoon. But for some reason we found it too serious. However, in the beginning of this year, we suddenly started to shoot. Timeless story about… About greed? ... Fear? Force? Weakness? Cruelty? Should we condemn the protagonists or sympathize with them? And could we turn out in the same situation?

Something extraordinary happens: like in a Kafka story, someone wakes up one morning and has dramatically changed. This someone, an officer, is not accepted anymore and suffers so much from it, that he nearly commits suicide. The animated film presents a rescue in the very last moment, when two outsiders come together and create something new. It's a touching and universal message, made with simple though appealing technique. YOUKI 2015
